Design Categories Explained
Design categories help you control which designs are available for each product in the customizer.
By default, a design can be available for all products. However, you can also choose to include it only on specific products or exclude it from selected products.
This is useful when you have designs that only fit certain products, such as a polo design, a short sleeve design, or a product-specific layout.
How Design Product Rules Work
Each design has a product assignment rule.
You can choose between:
Rule | Description |
All Products | The design is available for every product in the customizer |
Include Specific Products | The design is only available for the products you select |
Exclude Specific Products | The design is available for all products except the products you select |
These rules help organize your designs and make sure customers only see designs that are compatible with the product they are customizing.
1. Open the Designs Page
From your admin area, go to the Designs section.
This page shows all designs available in your account.
2. Select the Design
Click on the design you want to organize or categorize.
This opens the design detail page.
Inside the design detail page, you will see sections such as:
Overview
Products
3. Open the Products Section
Go to the Products section of the design.
This is where you can control which products can access the selected design.
By default, when a new design is created, it may be assigned to All Products.
This means the design can appear on every product in the customizer.
4. Assign the Design to Specific Products
If the design should only be available for selected products, choose:
Include Specific Products
This changes the design rule so that only the products you select can access the design.
After selecting this option, click the product selector and choose the products that should use the design.
For example, you can assign the design to:
Main Short Sleeve T-Shirt
Main Polo
Any other compatible product
You can add one product or multiple products.
Once selected, the products will appear in the list.
With this setup, the design will only show on those selected products inside the customizer.
5. Exclude the Design from Specific Products
If the design should be available for most products but hidden from a few, choose:
Exclude Specific Products
This means all products can access the design except the products you select.
For example, if you exclude:
Main Polo
Main Short Sleeve T-Shirt
Then the design will no longer appear for those two products, but it can still appear for the other products.
This option is useful when a design works for most products but does not fit a few specific models.
6. Test the Design in the Customizer
After updating the product rule, open the customizer and test the result.
Check the products that should show the design.
Then check the products that should not show the design.
For example:
If the design is included only for one product, it should appear only on that product
If the design is excluded from two products, it should disappear from those products but remain available on the others
Testing helps confirm that your design filtering is working correctly.
Example: Include Specific Products
Use Include Specific Products when a design should only be visible on selected products.
Example:
Rule | Selected product |
Include Specific Products | Main Short Sleeve T-Shirt |
Result:
The design appears only on the Main Short Sleeve T-Shirt and is hidden from all other products.
Example: Exclude Specific Products
Use Exclude Specific Products when a design should be visible on most products but hidden from selected ones.
Example:
Rule | Excluded products |
Exclude Specific Products | Main Polo, Main Short Sleeve T-Shirt |
Result:
The design is available for all products except the Main Polo and Main Short Sleeve T-Shirt.
Best Practices
When organizing designs:
Use All Products only when the design works correctly on every product
Use Include Specific Products for designs made for one product or one product family
Use Exclude Specific Products when a design works for most products but not all
Test the result in the customizer after changing the product rule
Avoid assigning designs to products with different UV layouts unless the design was made to fit them
Keep product assignments clean so customers only see compatible designs
Summary
Design product rules help you organize which designs appear on which products.
You can make a design available for all products, include it only on selected products, or exclude it from specific products.
This makes the customizer easier to use and prevents customers from selecting designs that do not fit the product they are customizing.
